I’ve always been an advocate of Detroit. People have this perception, this skewed perception, of the once thriving city. Most of this is fueled by the media, whether through movies, TV shows or music. Maybe they should look a little deeper…

Like I said I’ve always been a fan of Detroit, but I never thought I’d enjoy being downtown on a daily basis as much as I do. Something is happening in the city. I can see the changes. I can feel the energy. It feels good to know that the company I work for is taking the reins and steering the city in a positive direction.

Detroit focused so much on the automotive industry that it neglected, well, everything else. The focus has switched. Detroit is jumping into a new phase – the 2.0 phase. With four buildings purchased in the past few months, Dan Gilbert is ushering in the new phase himself. For those of you who don’t know, Dan Gilbert is the Founder and Chairman of Quicken Loans. He plans to renovate the buildings and create a hub for up-and-coming internet-based companies.

You can never win a battle alone and Quicken Loans isn’t alone here. Of course GM is downtown, but other companies are migrating from the suburbs and even other states. Insurance juggernaut Blue Cross Blue Shield recently joined GM in the Renaissance Center. GalaxE Solutions, a New Jersey-based internet company, opened an office. Jack Morton, an event marketing group, moved from Troy to Detroit. California ad agency GSP opened an office in Detroit as well.

Gilbert is also a member of the private investment firm hoping to fund a light-rail train system from the Detroit city center to 8 Mile Rd. I am a huge supporter of this. In February, I wrote the Light Rail Transit Project expressing my support. I think this would be a great way to attract more people to the city. With more people in the city business can sustain and flourish.

Dan Gilbert and Quicken Loans are the nucleus for this rebirth of Detroit. I feel honored to work for the company on the forefront of the revitalization movement. I love living in Michigan and working in Detroit. I hope to stay here and be part of the building process.
